Fight Procrastination Day! Let Us Make It Easy For You To Save
By Maura C. Schauss, CFP
In any given month, there are well over 100 nationally recognized “days” on the calendar. Some of them are days to honor people, historical events, or important causes, and others are downright silly. Amidst all the significant or odd holidays in September, there is one that we think is critical to recognize: Fight Procrastination Day!
Our Brains Work Against Us
Procrastination is a way of life for many of us. A recent study on urgency versus importance found that we often give in to small but urgent tasks that have a near-term deadline instead of working away at important long-term projects.1 The urgent tasks usually have an instant reward attached to them, whereas with larger goals, it can be difficult to stay the course, not knowing when you will receive a payoff.
Nowhere is this idea more evident than in your personal finances. It’s easy to get caught up in the day-to-day financial management of working for a paycheck, paying bills, and filing taxes, but not taking the time to create a comprehensive financial plan for your short-term and long-term goals isn’t going to help your future self.
One thing that’s for sure is that it’s all too easy to procrastinate the things that seem painful or complicated. Finances often bring up worry, stress, fear, and other negative emotions. Many people don’t know where to start or what to do. They might not know how to create a budget, pay off debt, or save for retirement, and it can be difficult to take care of all the details involved in estate planning or retirement planning. Or maybe they’re having difficulty seeing eye to eye with their spouse, partner or significant other.
In honor of Fight Procrastination Day, let us be your accountability partner and help you! You tell us where you want to go financially and we will put you on track to get there. Sure, it may include setting up an account, identifying a savings plan, but we commit to working with you to make the process easy, painless and potentially even a little fun!
